Haute NYE Looks For The Kim (Kardashian), Kate (Moss), Jennifer (Aniston) and Cameron (Diaz) in all of us…or What are Kim, Kate, Jennifer and Cameron wearing on New Year’s Eve?

In Celebrity personal appearences, Fashion Blog, Fashion news, Fashion trends, Hollywood Update, New Years Eve Fashions, Style and fashion trends, Uncategorized on December 29, 2009 at 5:45 am

Who are you going to be for New Year's Eve??

…So like every other new year’s holiday it becomes a battle in your head.

The familiar refrain begins such as

I -don’t- have- plans- yet…I- am- not sure- what- everyone- else- is doing- yet battle,

the I- don’t like -any- of- the- options- being-presented objection,

then there’s I- hate- new years- but- I- don’t- want- to- stay- home- watching- Kathy Griffin- trying- too- hard-to- be- controversial arguement,

Ms Griffin and Mr Cooper NYE 2008. KG seen here in strategic comtemplation on how she can steal the moment/evening/week from AC thereby extending her fame a few minutes more by employing gratutious controversy and vulgar jokes. Compelling reason enough to leave the house.

and the ever popular I- am- fat- from- all- the- holiday- food- cookies- candy- sprinkles- gingerbread- eggnog- lattes- and- have- no- idea- how- I- will- shoehorn -my- body- into- anything,

and finally my personal favorite the I- hate- new- years- but- I- like- the- clothes- so- I- need- to- build- an- event- around -the- dress- I -need- a- good- excuse- to- buy….

Familiar?? I for one have uttered each of these statements silently in an obssessive duel between my practical nature that knows better than to expect really cool things to happen surrounding this holiday and my A type personality which in the past has taken matters in hand and has either thrown parties even  Diddy would admire or I have made sure I am off to NY or some foreign country to see what they’re doin for New Year’s Eve…

For the record, come on… we’re women. We re genetically predisposed to overthink and overanticipate this holiday. Ive worked my way through the 12 steps to getting off this holiday addiction… but I confess I still fall off the wagon now and again. This year its Sam Edelman’s SKY HIGH  black suede platform pumps encrusted with black, grey and clear crystals  …Georges V anyone??? Look, I can quit anytime I want…

So… dear friends who are struggling I have a few thoughts on NYE glamour for each of the style icons we have covered in the “Who is your style icon” exercise on this very blog…

Who do you want to be when the big ball drops??!!? Here’s a few ideas to get your glamour girrrrrrrl to come out and play!!

Lil Kim / Big Kim (Kardashian) Styles for “The Bombshell”

Go for the Gold...leggings and gold, 2 big trends that go great together!

The Iconoclast (left) The Bombshell (right) these 2 friends showed upto shop for NYE looks and within 10 minutes it was clear they had found THEIR iconic looks for the evening! Dress and skirt by Laroc. It's hard to see here but the clothing is comprised of metalic pailettes which shimmer and flutter alluringly! Definately a party showstopper!

Kate (Moss) Chloe (Seveigny… enough with the Kardashians pleez!) and SJP.

 Channeling The Iconoclast

a great dress deserves great boots! The high low textural contrast between this shimmering Jenny Han dress and strong leather shoe boots strike just the right note of rebellion...

For the Kate Moss boho sensibilty, apres ski lodge party for 2 or anywhere in the midwest...

Options for The LA Woman…

Studded leggings a boyfriend blazer and plaid...Grunge Moderne....

Going to the Key Club Re opening on New Years are you...here's a hott idea that will give you access uhm maybe even all access...Metal Chain Top and Goth Leather Jacket courtesy Nikki Sixx and Kelly Grey of Royal Underground

Lest we forget, Dear Modern Classicist, this holiday is yours! Between all the highly dramatic LBDs, restrained but luxurious use of sequins, paillettes and feathers, my dear, this is a Holly Go Lightly Holiday on parade! Here are but a few examples of moderrn chic that pay serious homage to Grace and Audrey…

A little David Meister in the evening is a very good thing!

Holly Go Lightly redux by Marc Jacobs. A girly yet ultimately sophisticated sheath and a field if organza rosettes on the sleek but softly tailored skirt. Ladylike refinement for the urban fashionista...

Finally Styles Cool Sister, Ms Casual Chic vis a vis Jenn, Cam and Cindy are the impossible chic epitome of american style. Here’s how it looks when this girl goes out on the town…

Easy, Breezy and Flirty Fun for the Boho Casually Chic Girlie Girl. A sensous Milly LBD! I see shoe boots or the gorgeous flat heeled coach riding boots with this one for a little contrast...

This is a Cameron Diaz style for the quirky but casual girl. This is actually more dramatic and delicate in person. The fact that I am completely distracted and annoyed by the fact that this model’s legs are so long and thin that she has a gap as wide as the Holland Tunnel between her thighs is not helping my mood one bit…the black nets are tacky too… Cindy or Jenn would wear perfectly tanned bare legs, gorgeous pedicure and effortlessly chic sandals as the perfect accessory but then again it’s 70 in so cal right now : )

This is shown as a top but it really shines as a shimmery simple chic shift best worn alone (think Cindy Crawford getting married barefoot on the beach, only different or as a great layering piece under a simply elegant boyfriend jacket or evening coat.

So there you have it , a few moments of sanity for a very tricky holiday. Best advice? (not that you asked) Be comfortable and be very much your gorgeous self ! It’s a long night (life) so you might as well wear what shows you to your best advantage, your personal style and confidence!

Brad Pitt admits waking up next to Quentin Tarantino’s dildo…twice! Inglourious Basterds SAG screenings and director’s Q and A, 11/22/09

In Celebrity personal appearences, Entertainment News, Hollywood Update, Uncategorized on November 23, 2009 at 6:49 am

Quentin Tarantino I’ve missed you.

I’ve missed your rapid fire monologues and adventures into the deep recesses of your brain. I’ve missed your wit, your ability to make blood beautiful and most of all I’ve missed your single-minded assurance in taking what most consider a highly charged, sensitive subject and blowing the shit out of it in a battle cry that is overdue by what 70 years give or take??

Quentin demonstrating his directing style

Yup. My love is rekindled. Inglourious Basterds, a film with the main theme of revenge, is set in an alternate history of World War II in which the entire top leadership of Nazi Germany, namely Hitler, Goering, Goebbels and Bormann attend a film premiere in Paris celebrating the exploits of a German sniper who had managed to kill 300 American soldiers in Italy. Most of the film’s timeframe is set in early June 1944, after the D-Day landings but before the liberation of Paris.

QT and his ensemble cast for Q and A after film screening.

I attended a SAG screening and director’s Q and A led by QT which included the irreverent and talented international cast single-handedly selected by QT himself. He was steadfast in answer to why he wouldn’t meet with German born actress Diane Kruger who happily resides in LA but was required to travel to Berlin for an audition with Mr. Tarantino The man has a method so don’t bother mixing meetings with your American actors in Germany or your Italians in England. If there’s business to be done it’s gonna get done in your natural habitat with the ruthless precision of “the actor’s director.”

You really don’t watch a Tarantino film nor apparently do you show up to “act” your part in one of his films. “There is a tight, clearly drawn vision with a poetic meter and pace. It’s almost like rap music.” noted QT in answer to his creative process of writing and directing. “Yeah, it’s a poetic rap which if you try to improvise or throw in your own stuff totally destroys the rhythm of the work” observed the one and only Brad Pitt.

I have always felt that you don’t really watch a Tarantino film you enter a world where the only requirement is to suspend reality and just go with him to someplace completely different than you thought you were going. Anything is possible, anything is reality. It’s like getting lost on a road trip and deciding to stop at every roadside bar, not for directions but to get the stories of strangers in process of living their lives. One of my favorite moments in the film, for example, was a scene where a one-sided romantic interest between 2 of the characters culminates in a feverish shootout. As the two lay dying in pools of blood, the scene is taken to another level by the beautifully scored music of Ennio Morricone. Pure Tarantino.

Brad with his offhand sexy ways...seemed completely unimpressed with himself...

Brad Pitt as a Basterd

Brad Pitt, dressed in head to toe gray, his gorgeous mane of hair hidden by a knit hat and sporting a 3 inch goatee was the epitome of handsome indifference. He elaborated on the subject of being on a Quentin Tarantino set which apparently does not allow for going through the motions even though “ the script, the characters, the work, it is already done for you.”

“When you come on set, you gotta be ready to play. You are in church, the script is the Bible and Quentin is….GOD… You are in school and there are no naps allowed.”

At this point Brad told the story corroborated by QT and the rest of the cast that if you where caught taking a nap on set, Quentin would snap a photo of your sloth-like mug in blissful slumber, with a huge purple dildo nestled up to you and then post it for all the cast to enjoy. Brad held up 2 fingers to the audience confirming his dubious distinction of being posted not once but twice on the board of shame.

There were many highpoints to this event like seeing the Oscar bound German actor Christoph Waltz describe his journey from relative unknown in America to landing the prized part of Col. Hans Landa, or QT relating the genesis of the film from idea stage to completion as a truly international film which is as much a foreign film with a healthy supply of subtitles as it is a vehicle smacking of American gumption and Spaghetti Western references.

At one point actor and audience member Martin Kove from The Karate Kid 2 stood up to compliment QT on his music selection which featured David Bowie’s theme from Cat People and to relate his experiences of working on the Karate Kid with the aforementioned Ennio Morricone. At that point Brad Pitt interjected that he had just watched The Karate Kid with his children and that his oldest daughter now insists upon wearing her hair spiked like Ralph Macchio’s character in the film.

At the close of the 4 hour event I realized not only was I being asked to leave the theatre but I was walking through the looking glass and exiting the magical alternate universe that is a Tarantino screening and Directors Q and A in Hollywood.

…give me the magic potion, I wanna go back.

Sting:If On A Winter’s Night new release available Monday 10/26

In New music releases, Uncategorized on October 25, 2009 at 3:07 pm

Maybe I’ve been in Southern California too long, maybe I’ve always had unacknowledged longings for men who look like russian authors, maybe I will always love Sting and his love for dissonant combinations of notes and the minor scale so I forgive him for going through a russian author phase???, maybe I really miss the cold slap of winter and the icy stillness after a major snowstorm,  maybe it’s all of the above?

Whatever…I am soooo needing this new release from the master of so many musical genre’s he is now his own genre. Enjoy the rich visuals and Stings’ narrative on why he is a winter person while I make my travel plans for Switzerland…

Famed street style photog Scott Schuman, famous, even among fashion’s elite ( Mario Testino contributes a jacket quote that proclaims Scott’s blog as “the place to see and be seen”) named by Time magazine as one of  The Top 100 Design Influencers for chronicling inspiring images daily on his internationally renown blog  The Sartorialist has been making the book-signing rounds from Paris to London to New York to Milan and made his way to Los Angeles, specifically Barney’s and the Beverly Center.  Both events were Thursday, October 22. A Book Signing Party was hosted from 8pm-10pm on the viewswept  rooftop of the Beverly Center at the Terrace Lounge.

Scott Schuman's appearance at Barney's LA, Thursday afternoon

The line started outside the venue at the velvet rope as some of the most stylish people Ive seen in LA in a very long time waited patiently for entre. (Thanks to my spontaneous networking skills and shameless name-dropping I mentioned event producer and trendsetter Susie Vance’s name so as to sail by jealous onlookers and into the big event).

I thought I’d wandered into midnight at Skybar as waves of sexy remixes courtesy of the dj whose name I was remiss in getting set a sensual, loungy feel and Simon LA provided fabulous food and drink. Large, illuminated, photo displays of some of Scott’s fashion spottings from the book framed the terrace and became photo ops for the party attendees … the effect was California Chic meets New York Glamour.  The Sartorialist book was available briefly at Traffic Men and Traffic Women (the paperback $25, the Bespoke edition $175) in the mall however they sold out in the first hour.

The atmosphere was a mash-up of red carpet exuberance meets clubby overindulgence and posturing mixed with polite restraint by the literary devotees waiting in  orderly silence for their books to be signed. Schuman signed each book and greeted each fan graciously and with great interest.  He mingled briefly due overwhelmingly to the long line of fans waiting for a moment with the maestro. He signed up to the appointed 10pm cutoff after which event security made it obvious the party was over.

I left the event wishing for the opportunity at some point to see Scott in a completely different context. One where he might speak to the process of capturing spontaneous examples of style. I would also love to hear his observations on the fashion industry he left after 15 years in order to reconcile the gap between that industry and ultimately the audience it serves who typically have little in common with 6 ft tall supermodels from Brazil. Until that day, a signed copy of this graceful tribute to the art of fashion and the gift of style will suffice!

Book available at Amazon.com. See the review below, courtesy Amazon.com

Scott Schuman just wanted to take photographs of people on the street who looked great. His now famous blog (‘the bellwether American site that turned photo blogging into an art form’ – “New York Times”) was an attempt to showcase the wonderful and varied sartorial tastes of real people – not only those of the fashion industry. The book is a beautiful anthology of Scott’s favorite shots from around the world. They include photographs of well-known fashion figures as well as those shots of the anonymous passerby whose imagination and taste delight the viewer. From the streets of Rio to Beijing, Stockholm to Milan, these are the people who have inspired Scott and in turn, inspired designers and people of all ages, wages and nationalities with an interest in fashion. Intimately designed and created with Scott, the book is a handsome object in its own right, in full color on hand-picked, quality paper. –This text refers to the Paperback edition.

Iconic Images of Style…Who is Your Style Architype?

In Fashion news, Fashion trends, Style and fashion trends, Uncategorized on September 23, 2009 at 2:33 am

“It's our hearts and brains that we should exercise more often. You can put on all the makeup you want but it won't make your soul pretty.” Kevyn Aucoin

“It's our hearts and brains that we should exercise more often. You can put on all the makeup you want but it won't make your soul pretty.” Kevyn Aucoin

Kevyn Aucoin was a genius.

So is my sister. When I was 14 and having a really tough time defining myself and gettting no love from the who’s who in high school biotches my sister gave me sterling advice. She asked me who I wanted to be and what that would look like. After which I was to find a picture that mirrored that vision as closely as possible. Thus began my love affair with styling and fashion for fashioning a new identitiy. Clothes do make the man… and women it would seem. I remember to this day my  “picture” It was a woman channeling a Bianca Jagger-Marissa Berenson-Halstonian- smokey eyed-dark haired-celebutante. Wearing an ivory YSL shirtdress style cocktail dress that was open to her navel, she looked alluringly beautiful and mysterious. Surpirsingly it was a quietly confident and sexy image she projected. Sexiness is definately a slippery slope and can tumble into overt trashiness with one false move. In short elegance and sexiness can be a difficult achievement. This image managed both beautifully… Definately a woman with a story! This image is with me still and has informed my personal style for many years and many style incarnations. bianca in YSL

Kevin Aucoin had it right. His re-imagining of celebrities and regular people alike into dramatic beauties using the glamor of a 30’s moviestar template was revolutionary for the conventional wisdom of the “natural look” movement. He was shaving hairlines and adding hair extensions long before it was a TMZ topic. His genius was at once before it’s time and yet reminiscent of the studio system of hollywood beauty. It is a concept worth exploring to define a direction and harness personal style.

Many of us unconsciously express more than one iconic style. Sometimes all the same time! Who are you really and what makes the most of what you’ve got? The list of beautiful women of style is by no means complete but it is helpful imagery for discovering the woman within. Who is your dominant Style Icon? As your Lifestylist in residence I am available for a personal appointment or at this blog to style your best look! Send your questions or pictures here and I’ll post them along with clothing suggestions in keeping with your iconic style!

Not Your Mama’s Hudsons Part II: Georgia May Jagger Has All The Right Genes

In Fashion news, Fashion trends, Premium Denim, Uncategorized on September 9, 2009 at 3:37 am

Haute off the presses, (so hot it doesnt even have audio yet…) here’s a preview of the eagerly awaited new ad campaign for the Hudson Jeans reinvigorated fall collection. Featuring 17 year old Georgia May Jagger and her boyfriend son of Eurythmics’ Dave Stewart, it proclaims “She is London and London is Her.” It’s a new level of chic and decadence for the brand which has always enjoyed a loyal if not slightly sedate following…Put on your crash helmet that’s all about to change…

As an aside, Big Daddy Mick is allegedly dubious about the newly inked multi million dollar spokesmodel deal and rather affronted but the er..overt nature of the campaign. Mama and Model of 70’s Super Icon Behaviour Gerry Hall is reported to have some simple advice to her newly minted supermodel spawn…”be nice to everyone, even if you don’t like them…”

Somewhere Marianne Faithfull has to be in hysterical laughter at the irony of it all…and the beat goes on…

Breaking News: Anna Wintour Morphs Into Pug…

In Fashion news, Fashion trends, independant films, Uncategorized on September 6, 2009 at 7:01 am

My life as a pug…Ms. Wintour was discovered padding about her NY townhouse by staffers. Sources speculate overexposure to chemicals used to dye furs unusually noxious colors could be at cause or Ms Wintour was too close to her cheval mirror while casting last week’s hexes on her employees. Wintour’s staffers were unavailable for comment as it was confirmed many were headed to Belize for an impromptu Labor Day getaway.

… In a seemingly unrelated story Valentino: The Last Emperor on DVD drops Tuesday 9.08.09 …

Dressed: a fashion documentary about life

In Fashion news, Fashion trends, independant films, Uncategorized on August 13, 2009 at 4:55 am

nary blue

nary naked

In a time when so many of us are starting from zero or finding it necessary to completely redefine our identity, values or what is really worth the fight, I offer the soon to be released documentary “Dressed” www.dressedthemovie.com . It’s the extraordinary true story of fashion designer Nary Manivong who at 14 became homeless and the sole support of 2 siblings in Columbus OH. Living a life without benefit of security, education or resources Manivong surmounted every obstacle. Driven by a desire and a talent for spotting good design, he began a self guided education of vintage clothing in shops on the streets he called home. Creating a line of modern designs with gestures to an 80’s sensibility he emerged in 2005 as a significant and original voice in NY fashion.

Dressed chronicles the trajectory from abject poverty to the beau monde of fashion’s elite and the arduous process of preparing his second line for premiere during Fall ‘09 Fashion Week. It provides narratives on the knife’s edge existence of self -financed designers by highly regarded industry insiders who agreed to be part of this project such as Simon Doonan, Nanette Lapore and Mary Gehlhar, Author and VP Brand Strategy Gen Art.

This richly drawn portrayal of courage, passion and determination is not allowed the luxury of a Hollywood ending. After his 2005 NY triumph, as orders were pouring in, Manivong’s sole investor pulled out. It remains to be seen how all this will play out. What we inherit is a documentary with no promise of redemption, fueled only by the talent and character of an anti hero trusting that he can draw upon his experience to begin the process of reinvention… yet again.

Dressed is a testament to the strength of human spirit in the face of overwhelming circumstances and a powerful metaphor for a nation in the process of reinvention.
