Iconic Images of Style…Who is Your Style Architype?

“It's our hearts and brains that we should exercise more often. You can put on all the makeup you want but it won't make your soul pretty.” Kevyn Aucoin

“It's our hearts and brains that we should exercise more often. You can put on all the makeup you want but it won't make your soul pretty.” Kevyn Aucoin

Kevyn Aucoin was a genius.

So is my sister. When I was 14 and having a really tough time defining myself and gettting no love from the who’s who in high school biotches my sister gave me sterling advice. She asked me who I wanted to be and what that would look like. After which I was to find a picture that mirrored that vision as closely as possible. Thus began my love affair with styling and fashion for fashioning a new identitiy. Clothes do make the man… and women it would seem. I remember to this day my  “picture” It was a woman channeling a Bianca Jagger-Marissa Berenson-Halstonian- smokey eyed-dark haired-celebutante. Wearing an ivory YSL shirtdress style cocktail dress that was open to her navel, she looked alluringly beautiful and mysterious. Surpirsingly it was a quietly confident and sexy image she projected. Sexiness is definately a slippery slope and can tumble into overt trashiness with one false move. In short elegance and sexiness can be a difficult achievement. This image managed both beautifully… Definately a woman with a story! This image is with me still and has informed my personal style for many years and many style incarnations. bianca in YSL

Kevin Aucoin had it right. His re-imagining of celebrities and regular people alike into dramatic beauties using the glamor of a 30’s moviestar template was revolutionary for the conventional wisdom of the “natural look” movement. He was shaving hairlines and adding hair extensions long before it was a TMZ topic. His genius was at once before it’s time and yet reminiscent of the studio system of hollywood beauty. It is a concept worth exploring to define a direction and harness personal style.

Many of us unconsciously express more than one iconic style. Sometimes all the same time! Who are you really and what makes the most of what you’ve got? The list of beautiful women of style is by no means complete but it is helpful imagery for discovering the woman within. Who is your dominant Style Icon? As your Lifestylist in residence I am available for a personal appointment or at this blog to style your best look! Send your questions or pictures here and I’ll post them along with clothing suggestions in keeping with your iconic style!

Not Your Mama’s Hudsons Part II: Georgia May Jagger Has All The Right Genes

In Fashion news, Fashion trends, Premium Denim, Uncategorized on September 9, 2009 at 3:37 am

Wowsa!!!

Haute off the presses, (so hot it doesnt even have audio yet…) here’s a preview of the eagerly awaited new ad campaign for the Hudson Jeans reinvigorated fall collection. Featuring 17 year old Georgia May Jagger and her boyfriend son of Eurythmics’ Dave Stewart, it proclaims “She is London and London is Her.” It’s a new level of chic and decadence for the brand which has always enjoyed a loyal if not slightly sedate following…Put on your crash helmet that’s all about to change…

As an aside, Big Daddy Mick is allegedly dubious about the newly inked multi million dollar spokesmodel deal and rather affronted but the er..overt nature of the campaign. Mama and Model of 70’s Super Icon Behaviour Gerry Hall is reported to have some simple advice to her newly minted supermodel spawn…”be nice to everyone, even if you don’t like them…”

Somewhere Marianne Faithfull has to be in hysterical laughter at the irony of it all…and the beat goes on…

Dressed: a fashion documentary about life

In a time when so many of us are starting from zero or finding it necessary to completely redefine our identity, values or what is really worth the fight, I offer the soon to be released documentary “Dressed” www.dressedthemovie.com . It’s the extraordinary true story of fashion designer Nary Manivong who at 14 became homeless and the sole support of 2 siblings in Columbus OH. Living a life without benefit of security, education or resources Manivong surmounted every obstacle. Driven by a desire and a talent for spotting good design, he began a self guided education of vintage clothing in shops on the streets he called home. Creating a line of modern designs with gestures to an 80’s sensibility he emerged in 2005 as a significant and original voice in NY fashion.

Dressed chronicles the trajectory from abject poverty to the beau monde of fashion’s elite and the arduous process of preparing his second line for premiere during Fall ‘09 Fashion Week. It provides narratives on the knife’s edge existence of self -financed designers by highly regarded industry insiders who agreed to be part of this project such as Simon Doonan, Nanette Lapore and Mary Gehlhar, Author and VP Brand Strategy Gen Art.

This richly drawn portrayal of courage, passion and determination is not allowed the luxury of a Hollywood ending. After his 2005 NY triumph, as orders were pouring in, Manivong’s sole investor pulled out. It remains to be seen how all this will play out. What we inherit is a documentary with no promise of redemption, fueled only by the talent and character of an anti hero trusting that he can draw upon his experience to begin the process of reinvention… yet again.

Dressed is a testament to the strength of human spirit in the face of overwhelming circumstances and a powerful metaphor for a nation in the process of reinvention.
